MRI Results on Knee – Training for 2026 Long Haul 100 Miler

I had an appointment with Dr. Presley today to go over the results of the MRI on my knee pain. From the MRI he said it looks like the “mild fraying/tearing of the medial meniscus” is what is causing the pain on my knee. Other than that and some wear-and-tear, everything else looked good and strong. I have a 100 mile ultramarathon in less than 4 weeks and he gave me the “go ahead” to do it as I’m keeping things slow and steady for the race and not overdoing it.

My knee area usually gets numb within a half mile and I can tolerate the pain or it gets more painful when I start putting too much pressure on it (running faster, quick twists/turns, running uphill fast). I started my own couch-to-100 miler training plan last month and feel good with how things have been going over the past. The knee hurts when getting in/out of cars, chairs and any bending of it. I ran/walked 10 miles every day for the past 10 days and things feel good for the race. I have been running 1-2 days of the week while splitting up the remaining days with walk/run segments.

I’m ready to go ride the pain train at the Long Haul 100 in January. If I finish, it will be my 13th 100 miler and I believe my 112th marathon.

If the knee gets worse after recovering from the race, I will see the doctor again to take a look at the knee to see how things actually look in comparison to the current MRI. He provided a few options if that happens but recommended the more natural way first (he’s a runner too).

I also want to thank everyone who has provided help with my knee (Dr Lynne Virant, Barbara Bruni @ Pilates Core Training and everyone else who has provided help and recommendations) – much appreciated!

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all!
