Greg takes the reader on multiple trails and an exploration of the greatest gifts of our spirit. A powerful reminder of the strength that lives inside all of us.
Fifteen years ago I was handed a diagnosis that would stop most people in their tracks — malignant brain cancer. I had brain surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. I had never run a day in my life.
Instead of sitting around waiting to die, I laced up a pair of shoes and started moving. One mile turned into a marathon. One marathon turned into a hundred. Running became my medicine, my meditation, my battle cry.
"If cancer wants to get me, it has to catch me!"
Since my first marathon in February 2014, I have completed over 114 marathons and ultramarathons — including 13 one-hundred-mile races. Every finish line is a reminder that the human spirit is undefeatable.
Follow the JourneyRunning Away From Cancer is the gripping memoir of a man who refused to accept defeat. Trace the evolution from a non-runner to an ultramarathon enthusiast — completing 100 marathons within a decade of his cancer diagnosis. This is a book about running, but more than that, it's a book about living.

About halfway through this book I started setting time aside to get out and walk in nature. I'm being literal when I call this book "inspirational". 5/5

Explore →They say every race has a story, but marathon #115 was nearly a short story that ended at Mile 10. I headed into the Oak Mountain 50k with high hopes, but the trails had other plans. Early on, my knee started acting up, sending those sharp reminders with every technical descent and rocky climb. For a good chunk of the first half, the "DNF" (Did Not Finish) thought was loud. I was ready to call it a day, find a comfortable spot at the aid station, and cheer everyone else on. But trail running is as much about the head…
